Kids Wrestling

Tonganoxie Kids Wrestling Club members competed at the sub district tournament last Saturday at Holton High School.

Tonganoxie took 23 wrestlers to the tournament. About 700 wrestlers competed.

The top four finishers in each group qualified for the district tournament this Saturday at Ottawa. Fifth-place finishers are alternates.

Eighth-grade boys

Tonganoxie's eighth-grade A team Warriors finished the season strong. After opening with five losses, the Warriors went 6-4, placing second in the Linwood Tournament.

"We were not playing as a team and spent the first part of the season learning what kind of team we could be," said Coach Larry Percy.

Once the team learned that lesson, the Warriors were at times awesome. In addition to beating a good Lansing team 41-29 and placing second at the Lexington Tournament, the eighth-graders beat Xavier and Linwood on their home floors, and pounded Perry by 28 points.

In the season-ending Linwood Tourney, the Warriors avenged an earlier two-point loss to Piper, handing the Pirates a 41-38 defeat.

"It was by far our best team effort and under very difficult circumstances," Percy said. "We really missed Justin (Walker) down the stretch."

The Warriors lost a heartbreaker to Monticello in the championship game, 34-26. The team led until the end of the third quarter and played great defense despite having only seven players suited up.

"The kids played their hearts out and wanted to bring home the first place trophy in honor of Jim Walker and for Justin," reflected Percy. "The Walker family is an integral part of this community and its athletic tradition."

Jim Walker died Feb. 20 in an automobile accident.

Baseball and softball

Sign-up for summer baseball and softball for children ages 5 to 14 begins today.

The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission has forms for parents to complete by March 25. The forms are also being handed out at Tonganoxie schools.

Fees range from $10 for T-ball to $20 for intermediate players ages 13 to 14.
