A municipal court judge found Linwood mayor Steve Campbell guilty Wednesday of attempting to avoid police during a routine traffic stop in July.

Campbell was charged in Lansing Municipal Court with driving under the influence and attempting to elude police. The charges stem from a July 2 incident in Lansing when Campbell allegedly attempted to avoid a traffic stop by local police.

His trial took place Wednesday.

According to municipal court officials, Lansing prosecutor Catalina Thompson dismissed the driving under the influence charge before Wednesday's trial. Campbell was found guilty of the attempting to elude police charge.

Thompson was not available for comment.

Municipal court judge William Pray fined Campbell $500 as a sentence for the guilty verdict.

According to Lansing police, Campbell was driving his 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle about 10:30 p.m. July 2. A police officer stopped Campbell near the intersection of Kansas Highway 7 and Highland Street.

Campbell, owner of Fro's Hideout, a local watering hole, is in the midst of serving his first term as Linwood mayor. He was elected in April via a write-in candidacy.

Campbell, 29, is thought to be one of the youngest mayors in the state.
