Here we are, right down to those 'last minute' gifts - time is running out.

However, before you go running off to the store, where you will just pick up something to poke into the gift bag, think about this: Is there something you could make?

Those handmade gifts are those most treasured. They were made by someone who loves you and who knows just what would please you most.

There are so many gifts one can make and let the children make. They love to create. Let them decide what that special person would like.

Their art work, a pin cushion, scarf, pot holders, pillows, a bird house for gramps are just a few ideas. Shoe scrapers and picture frames are great gift ideas as well.

Judy has some handmade gifts she received last year from her grandmother.

"I'll treasure them forever," she said about something she really needed living out in the country on a dusty road. "Grandma calls them 'dust covers.'"

Dust covers are just round circles of cloth with embroidery and lace edging.

The cover has a hole in the middle to drop down over a hanger.

Dust is one of Judy's problems of course.

"But I like my windows open when possible so I just accept the fact that there will be dust," she said.

Irene makes lots of hand made applique and embroidery work.

She has a tip for us. She said that she learned the hard way years ago that it is very wise if there is any cotton in the fabric, even the embroidery thread (I just don't trust it).

"I just soak the whole skein then spread it on a towel to dry," she said.
