Drivers heading out Friday will find area highways mostly wet and slushy after an overnight storm left anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of new snow on the ground.

Kimberly Qualls with the Kansas Department of Transportation said at 2 p.m. today that highways in Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties were mostly wet and slushy. Meanwhile, roads in Douglas County remained snowpacked in spots.

A snow advisory expired at noon Friday, after snow had moved out of the area earlier Friday morning.

Qualls said KDOT crews continue to treat all roadways, bridges and overpasses with a sand and salt mixture, and to plow all surfaces to remove melting snow. Sunshine, she said, has helped warm the road surface, allowing much of the snow to begin to melt.

Roadways, including ramps and overpasses, may still be slick due to the snowpacked and/or slushy conditions, so drivers should be extra cautious as they travel today, Qualls said.

Toward evening when the temperatures drop and the sun sets, roads may refreeze becoming slick in spots. Drivers should use caution, allow extra driving time, and be sure to turn on their headlights, and turn off their cruise control as they head out Friday, she said.
