The Jarbalo United Methodist Women met for their monthly meeting last Wednesday at the church. President Marilyn Oxley called the meeting to order and Pastor Larry Grove gave the prayer. Eight members of the group answered roll call and reported 33 care calls.

Ryan Saxton is McLouth High School’s Student of the Month for January. Ryan, a senior, is the son of Richard and Theresa Saxton. He plans to attend Kansas University with a split-major in pre-med and pre-dentistry and a minor in either mechanics or electricity. This award is sponsored by the McLouth Kiwanis, honoring students who have exhibited outstanding citizenship and scholarship.

Editor’s note: This poem was written by Raymond Stephenson, who is the father of Tonganoxie resident Jan Shoemaker, who submitted the work. Mr. Stephenson, who now is 86 and lives in Phoenix, served in World War II. This poem was written by then-Ensign Stephenson, a radio operator, while on board the liberty ship, Nathan S. Davis, in the Pacific Ocean.

A year ago, Karen Stockman’s third-graders started angling for a state fish. The children voted on the bluegill and started their campaign. They wrote to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who wrote back, saying the designation would require a change in state law.
