Remember When: A Community Review

10 years ago: April 1, 1998

Two children were killed last Saturday in a two-car accident that was severe enough to have 18 emergency vehicles respond to the scene. Police identified the victims Monday, Justin Williams, 11, of Tonganoxie and Tiffany Russell, 7, of Kansas City, Kan., both lost their lives in the accident. The accident also left four others injured ,who have remained hospitalized.

Caleb Patrick Dame, 11 weeks old, Tonganoxie, passed away March 30, 1998. Caleb was born January 9, 1998, the son of Preston Michael and Jessica Lorraine (Cowles) Dame.

Birth: Chloe Jo McKenna Fewins, daughter of Scott and Carrie Fewins, Lawrence, was born March 22, 1998.

Four seventh-grade students were pages for Senator Don Biggs on March 25. Pictured are David Lindquist and Laura Korb of Tonganoxie, Governor Bill Graves, Senator Biggs, Lacey Hanson and Sara Bellinger of Oskaloosa.

Springdale Scene: Fariss Stolte was celebrating his 86th birthday on Friday the 27th. He is feeling very well now and will soon have eye surgery.

25 years ago: March 30, 1983

Deaths: Mrs. Louise Elizabeth Mills, 83, Tonganoxie, passed away March 26, 1983; Ronald G. Reed, Sr., 66, Kansas City, Kan., died March 25, 1983.

Births: Rick and Nancy McKinsey were blessed March 16, 1983, with a baby girl, April Michelle.

Linwood News: Harry Jay Hicks, 83, died March 19, at his home near Vinland. He was born in Linwood; Harry R. Davenport, 82, Linwood, died March 19. Mr. Davenport had lived in Linwood since 1940.

Jarbalo Jottings: On May 9, 1983, the town of Jarbalo will be 100 years old. To celebrate the occasion, it has been decided to have an observance on Saturday, May 7. With the town being so small and having no finances, the best way to celebrate is to have a giant yard sale, or flea market, with those in town who wish to participate having their own yard sale, and those from out of town having a space in the street by the block by the Grange Hall.

We learned today from Mrs. Bernard Uhlrich that they have received their 100th child, Monday, into their home. That’s really a wonderful thing to do, to care for others (From Helen Schilling’s column, Happenings In and Around Tonganoxie).

Mrs. Shirley Vukas of Tonganoxie and Mr. Sam Vukas of Kansas City, Kan., wish to announce that their daughter, Miss Samantha Sue Vukas, has been selected as a candidate in the 1983 Miss Teen of Kansas Pageant to be held in June 9-11 in Salina. Samantha is 15 years old and is a sophomore at Tonganoxie High School.

50 years ago: April 17, 1958

Deaths: Mrs. Susan Cole, age 96 years, passed away April 14, 1958, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maud Mark in Casey, Iowa. Mrs. Cole formerly lived in Tonganoxie; William Hill, Sr., Kansas City, passed away April 6, 1958, at the age of 75 years; John Floyd Noble, 79, passed away April 11, 1958, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. W. Woodcox, in Leavenworth; John C. Caps, 90, Colorado Springs, Colo., an early day manufacturer of motor cars in Kansas City, died Sunday; Bernard Thorpe, 62, Topeka, died April 9, 1958.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Soetaert announce the birth of a son, Martin Robert, April 12, 1958; Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. Baragary announce the birth of a son, Dale Jerome, on April 12, 1958

Linwood: Mr. and Mrs. Edward Trowbridge announce the birth of a daughter April 10, 1958.

The Junior Play was given Friday evening with Sharon Freeman taking over the role of Vivian, when Sharon Wickey came down with the mumps. At intermission time a clarinet solo was played by Karen Romine.

The sincere sympathy of the people of Tonganoxie to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Handley. They left on an emergency trip recently because of the illness of Mrs. Handley’s mother, Mrs. Kathryn Bacon. Mrs. Bacon passed away just a few hours before the Handleys arrived at the family home in California.

75 years ago: March 23, 1933

George Adam Seufert, a resident of Kansas for more than 66 years and of this vicinity most of that time, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John V. Herrmann at Parsons last Sunday, aged 100 years and ten months. Mr. Seufert came to this country in 1836, saw it develop during his century of life. (Mr. Seufert was born in Baden, Germany, May 20, 1832.)

Tonganoxie Rural High School reopened Wednesday after being closed since Thursday, when Dudley Buyas, a student from near Bonner Springs, became ill with scarlet fever and Doctor Adams, county health officer, closed the high school to prevent further spread of the disease. Meanwhile, Roy Olsen, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Olsen, became ill Sunday. He is in grade school and while the school remained open those students in the grades who had played with the little Olsen boy Saturday, or Sunday, were sent to their homes. However, the Olsen boy had visited in Dafer district and when it became known he had scarlet fever, that rural district closed temporarily.

Mrs. A. L. Edminister, a former resident of Fairmount Township for many years, passed away last Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. G. Shaw at Denver, Colorado.

STOLEN: The crown and the sword from the lockers of the Eastern Star hall. Thief may return at once or the matter will be placed in the hands of detectives. Frances Myers, W.M.; Anna W. Simison, Secretary.

100 years ago: April 2, 1908

Geo. Sieber and his brother are going to start a glove factory and are looking around for a location.

Linwood: Mr. L. C. Sheets has sold his property here to Mr. Starling Bowen and Mr. Sheets will move this week to Topeka, where he will engage in the meat business. Dr. Vannoy will occupy the building as soon as Mr. Sheets moves.

A new baby arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ward, Wednesday of last week.

Twin boys arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Sechrest Thursday of last week. One of them lived about six hours and the other about three days. The combined weight of the little fellows was about 5 pounds.

Dr. C. V. Slaughter reports the arrival last Friday of an 8-pound boy at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Budy on the Harlow farm.

Stanwood: Leslie Goucher has been very ill with pneumonia fever for nearly two weeks.

Plans have been drawn for a $4,000 dwelling for the manager of the Clover Condensed Co. If the building is erected it will be on the west side of Tonganoxie Creek near the condensed milk plant.
