Few file protest forms regarding school tax error
May 7, 2008
Few residents have filed in protest on their property taxes regarding the Tonganoxie School District’s mill levy error that was made last year, according to Leavenworth County Treasurer Janice Young.
Young said that when the issue first came out, there were inquiries about filing petitions.
However, the case of a petition actually being filed has been a rarity.
“If we had one or two, that was it,” Young said.
Second half property taxes are due at the treasurer’s office at the courthouse by 5 p.m. Monday.
The error came about after Tonganoxie schools Superintendent Richard Erickson submitted an incorrect mill levy rate to the county of 54.696 mills instead of 50.603 mills, which was the new rate the board approved. Erickson, however, submitted the original rate, which cost taxpayers more than $368,000.
The board later approved scaling back the mill levy the next three years for a total of $415,000. The higher amount was set to cover interest on overcharges for this year.
A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in assessed valuation.
If residents do wish to protest their taxes, they need to file a payment under protest form and attach an illegal mill levy addendum.
That information is then sent onto the state for review.
For more information, contact Young at the courthouse, (800) 250-2057.
