The Tonganoxie High boys golf team had what coach Jared Jackson described as a “tough day” at its Monday regional at Bellevue Country Club in Atchison as none of the team’s golfers was able to score a berth at state.

The Chieftains shot 388 as a team, finishing, along with everybody else at the tournament, far behind champion Topeka Hayden. The Wildcat golfers combined for a score of 312. Second-place Jeff West shot 366.

Jackson said THS had played the course earlier this season and shot a 353, but conditions were far different this time around. For starters, at the regional golfers had to play farther back off the blue tees and THS played a lot of shots out of the rough, which the coach described as “thick and punishing.” Additionally, the wind was fierce, which impacted all the team scores.

As the day wore on, Jackson was afraid the Chieftains may have been underachieving, but learned that the entire field was struggling except for Topeka Hayden.

THS was led by senior Matt Williams, who shot a 94, falling just four strokes shy of the state-qualifying score of 90. Jackson said it would be easy to second-guess yourself in a situation like that, but it shouldn’t be the case for Williams.

“It was nice to see him end his career on a positive note,” Jackson said.

Dalton Lawson, 97, Drew Scates, 98, and Mitch Dehoff, 99, were bunched together for the next three best THS scores. Justin Soetaert shot a 106 and Tanner Newman posted 121.
