Hail to the Chieftains.
The Tonganoxie High School forensics squad brought home a Class 4A state title May 3 from Washburn Rural High School in Topeka.
The win is the third in THS school history. It goes nicely with the 11 state titles in debate. Oh, and by the way, THS brought home a state title in debate this year as well, making it the only school in Kansas to accomplish the feat, which is a rarity, according to coach Steve Harrell. However, it’s an accomplishment Tonganoxie has achieved before, one more reason the debate and forensics teams deserve big rounds of applause.
The music department is making noise — perhaps sweet music would be more applicable — as well. THS band and chorus members achieved the coveted “I” rating in several categories at state events in April.
State championships and achievements are more publicized in the sports world, but we think it’s also important to recognize students who are putting in plenty of hours in a field other than athletics.
So here’s to you, forensics team members and THS musicians.
Congratulations on jobs well done.

Thanks for the kind words of recognition. The kids have worked very hard this year and are very pleased with the results. THS has several very succesful programs that promote student acheivement beyond the classroom. FCCLA is very strong with state officers and state as well as national competitors. FBLA is an up and coming program that fielded a strong state team and advanced students to nationals in Atlanta. FFA is a strong program year after year with students winning judging events in many areas of agricultural interest. The Science Olympiad team at THS was very popular and the Art Club competed in contests with great results. Scholars Bowl was a short step from reaching state but did compete on TV this season. There are a lot of solid reasons to believe that student acheivement is on the rise at THS.
