Williams, infatuated with geography, takes knowledge to state
May 14, 2008
Tonganoxie Middle School eighth-grader Wes Williams knows geography.
That much was certain when last month Williams went to the Kansas State Geography Bee for the second time.
After winning the TMS geography bee, Williams took a written test compiled by the National Geographic Bee to become one of 100 students statewide who qualified for the competition in Abilene on April 4.
"Geography has always interested me,” Williams said. “When I was younger I would look at all the different kinds of maps I could.”
His geography knowledge, Williams said, increased thanks to the help of his TMS teacher, John Korb.
“I listened to Mr. Korb during class, took good notes and studied a lot,” Williams said when asked how he knew so much about geography. “It just seemed Mr. Korb made it more interesting to me."
Even though he already was quite knowledgeable on the subject, Williams said he put in some extra work to prepare for the state competition.
"I did as many worksheets as possible, read all the geography books I could and used the Internet to locate more information," he said.
Williams said he was rewarded for his hard work when he got to the Eisenhower Center for the state bee.
“It was quite the experience,” Williams said. “I made new friends and learned new things.”
