County Human Resources Director Diane Collins plays Mathilda “Tillie” Abeles, the wife of a 19th-century Leavenworth proprietor. The Abeles family donated 13 acres to the Leavenworth Board of Education that is now Abeles Field.
Acting as local humanitarian Harriet Cushing, Carol McCullough shares her experience creating and maintaining an orphan’s asylum in Leavenworth in the 1860s. McCullough was one of 16 actor-volunteers who performed Friday.
Carolyn Burton portrays Cathay Williams, the only documented female Buffalo Soldier in the American Civil War. Burton complained of a hip injury that would send her to the Army infirmary and would reveal her true gender.
