Leavenworth County District Judge David King swears in new county commissioner J.C. Tellefson. Tellefson represents the 1st District, which is in the norther part of the county. On Jan. 8, he was sworn into office - and elected to chair the commission.

In a supervised setting on a March 4, afternoon, Weston Jones, left, Joe Beach, Kyle Skinner and Nick Meador ride skateboards on First Street between Chieftain Park and VFW Park. The youths are among a group that hopes a skate park can be built in Tonganoxie. In December the Tonganoxie School Board donated land just south of the football stadium for the skate park.

Mollie Hoge, 7, carefully pets one of the many chicks available at a March 25, Easter photo session at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. This was the second year members of the 4-H club brought small animals like chicks, bunnies and lambs to the fairgrounds so children could be photographed with them. The club hopes to expand the number of animals for next year.
Tabitha Carroll puts the finishing touches of a rabbit face on 4-year-old Abraham Puebla. He and hundreds of other children braved the cold weather during the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission's annual Easter egg hunt on April 7.
The floor is full of slow-dancing couples at the Tonganoxie High School prom. The annual rite of spring was on April 14, at Fort Leavenworth's Frontier Conference Center.

New monument signs on the city's south and east sides greet residents and visitors to Tonganoxie. A star on the sign is supposed to represent the city's location in the state but actually would place a visitor west of Topeka.
Bill Green, Leavenworth County Public Works director, watches Stranger Creek floodwaters rush under a bridge on County Road 5. After Green's watch on a May 7, afternoon, County Road 5 was ordered closed for the day. Flooding on Stranger Creek caused the county to close several roads early May.

Larry Ross and more than 15 others attended the May 13, "Stand in the Park for Peace" demonstration at the VFW Park. The idea for the silent demonstration was from Sharon Mehdi's book, "The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering."

Melissa Johnson uses one of the bubble makers from her parent's booth, Schrunchies Galore, during this year's Tonganoxie Days. Johnson helps run the booth with her parents, Debbie and Ron, when they participate in craft shows on the weekends. "It's always cool being able to travel a lot with my dad," she said.
